Yankees 9, Blue Jays 2
WHAT A FUN WIN!
Phil Hughes struggled early on (read my previous post), but settled down to pitch a brilliant 6 innings. He allowed just 1 earned run during those 6 frames, on a measly 3 hits. Pitching Coach Ron Guidry seemed to point Hughes in the right direction, as the youngster really "drove" his pitches from the 3rd inning on.
Edwar Ramirez and Ross Ohlendorf were scintillating in relief of Hughes, as the Yankees used all rookies to pitch tonight. The future looks mighty bright.
Johnny Damon was tremendous tonight. He had 3 hits, 2 Ribbies, and made a run-saving (possibly game-saving) catch in the 2nd inning. He's playing a better left than center, and that's exactly where the Bombers should use him for the rest of the season. He set the table all night long.
Jason Giambi put the game to bed in the 5th inning, smashing an opposite field Grand Slam. Giambi is such a great hitter when he uses the entire field. Let's hope that it continues.
Jorge Posada continued HIS great year, doubling and homering. I shudder to think where the Yankees would be without Jorge and A-Rod.
Bobby Abreu had 2 doubles.
Another strong win. The Yankees gained a game in the loss column over the Tigers tonight, extending their lead to 5 games. For a while, it looked as though the Yankees would pull within 3 of Boston, but the Red Sox appear to have weathered the Tampa Bay storm tonight.
Let's keep it rolling tomorrow night! All the way to the Division Crown!
GO YANKEES!
