The King Lays Down His Crown

The New York Post is reporting that King George Steinbrenner has abdicated his throne, giving charge of the baseball operations to his sons.

I, for one, will miss George Steinbrenner.

Ever since 1973, I've felt like the Yankees have had an owner that hated to lose more than I did. And I REALLY hate to lose.

He was good for baseball; he restored PRIDE back to the Yankees, the way Ronald Reagan restored PRIDE back to being an American.

Those who remember the pre-Steinbrenner Yankees of the late 1960's and early '70's know exactly what I mean.

George Steinbrenner is hated for doing things his way. He is hated for spending HIS OWN MONEY and not asking for a dime from revenue sharing, taxpayers or local politicians.

Were mistakes made? Of course; no question. But were those mistakes made out of his passionate will to be the best? Most definitely. If in control myself, would I have made some of the same mistakes? Most probably.

All in all, I'll gladly take the sum total of his mistakes for the 34+ years of sheer baseball joy that he's given us fans.

THAT is the house that George built. And what a house it is!

Thanks, George!

You said it perfectly!! The man just wants to win, and he has done an awesome job his last 34 years. I hate it when people talk about how he spends so much money.... yeah people his OWN freaking money. I read a story a couple years back about the Twin's owner who has more money than George but spends so little of it. Thank God that I had an owner who spent his money to win. Hopefully will still see some of George because I heard that he still wants to have some say in what goes on.

I hope so too. I think that George took it harder than any of us when the Yankees lost. That was something that we could all fall back on. It a rare thing these days, to have a guy in charge that's sort of an "everyman" in that he experiences the same emotions as we do, win or lose.
Thanks, Amber!

I think the Yankees will do better next year. I hope Torre stays, it is not his fault. The Yankees should get Mickey Brantley as a coach, he just got fired with the Jays. He would be great in NYC.
